Iris Xu

Hi :) I'm a first-year MS CS student at UIUC. Previously, I studied computer science and mathematics at UBC.

I'm interested in computer vision and machine learning for robotics, particularly manipulation tasks. In the past, I've also worked on data-driven CS education research.

Projects

Integrated Simulation Workflows for Safer Cyber-Physical Systems

Research assistantship supervised by Prof. Margo Seltzer. Built simulation workflows for testing multi-robot manipulation setups to help bridge the gap between robotics algorithms and safe deployment in labs.

Exploring Vision-Augmented EMG Arm Prosthesis Control

Engineering team project with UBC Bionics. Fine-tuned an object detection model to support automated dexterous grasps. Evaluation revealed that mismatches between machine predictions and user intent pose a significant challenge when combining AI assistance with human control.

Teaching & Service

I was teaching assistant for CPSC 221: Data Structures and Algorithms in the Fall 2022, Fall 2024, and Winter 2024 terms.

I helped develop online course materials for CPSC 203: Programming, Problem Solving, and Algorithms and EOSC 112: The Fluid Earth Atmosphere and Ocean in Summer 2022.

I was a student volunteer at SIGGRAPH 2022 and a team leader in 2023.

I served on the executive teams for Women in Computer Science in 2021-2023, and for the Computer Science Student Society in 2024-2025.

Other

I enjoy traveling the world with my camera. [Map] [Photos]

I also play badminton, hike, and snowboard.
